Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader Triumphs with Over $12.5 Million in Revenue on Steam, Emerging as the Pinnacle Game of December
Owlcat Games has once again etched its name in success with Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, marking a victorious journey on Steam. GameDiscoverCo’s latest estimates reveal that the game stands as the highest-grossing new release on Steam for December 2023.
In the recent GameDiscoverCo newsletter, Simon Carless unveiled the impressive data, disclosing that Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader achieved a staggering gross revenue of approximately $12.6 million (pre-Valve’s 30% cut, factoring in refunds and taxes) in its inaugural month on Steam. This noteworthy accomplishment overshadowed the performance of another December debut, House Flipper 2, with its estimated gross revenue lingering around $9 million.

It’s important to highlight that GameDiscoverCo’s assessments are solely based on Steam. Considering Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader’s availability on the Epic Games Store, GOG, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, the total revenue is expected to surpass the reported figures.
Launched on December 7, the game reached its zenith with an impressive 45,405 concurrent players on Steam, trailing only 1,320 players behind the all-time high of Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. Notably, Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader secured the 7th position in peak CCU among nearly 1,500 titles with the CRPG tag, surpassing renowned titles such as Pillars of Eternity, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Wasteland 3.
Although Owlcat Games has not yet unveiled the official sales figures for Rogue Trader, the game undeniably stands as a commercial triumph. Post-launch, it swiftly claimed the 5th spot on Steam’s weekly top sellers chart, emerging as the second highest-grossing premium title for the week of December 5-12. While it slipped to #19 in the subsequent week, the game maintains its position among the top 50 highest-grossing products on the platform.
The comparison with Owlcat’s previous RPG, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, which sold over 250k copies in its first week (achieving a lifetime sales milestone of 1 million units in January 2023), adds an intriguing layer to Rogue Trader’s success narrative.
Presently, Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader holds a “Mostly Positive” rating on Steam, with 74% of the 7.9k reviews expressing positivity. Although this falls below the game’s initial 88% score at launch, the studio remains committed to addressing and rectifying main bugs and issues through ongoing patches.
